Today’s edition of The Star draws attention to the issue of warder-on-inmate violence with three articles on the topic.

Wits Justice Project (WJP) journalist Ruth Hopkins is quoted in a front page article, “Prison killing outrage“, about the death of an inmate who was allegedly assaulted by Groenpunt Prison warders earlier this week.

Fellow WJP journalist Carolyn Raphaely’s article, “Assault, torture of inmates rife in prisons nationwide”, features interviews with prisoners who have witnessed or been on the receiving end of warder brutality. The article is available on the WJP website and on The Star’s site.

Finally, The Star’s editorial discusses the conduct of journalists who witnessed the assault in Groenpunt which resulted in the inmate’s death, and the poor treatment of the journalists by Correctional Services officials on that day. The editorial is entitled “Two wrongs are not a right“.
