Phumlani Mazibuko, who is serving 10 years for armed robbery, earned 5 distinctions in the matric 2012 examinations, according to eNews Primetime.

Mazibuko was one of over 300 inmates at Westville prison who studied for matric last year.

The prison school, Usethubeni Youth School, has recently been renovated and was officially opened by the Minister for Correctional Serivces Sbu Ndebele on 22 January 2013.

Speaking at the event, Minister Ndebele said his department wants to make the equivalent of a Grade 9 education compulsory for all prisoners.
