The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has expressed concern about violence in Venezuela’s prisons, which it says is directly caused by overcrowding. The UN agency’s comment follows a riot on Friday 26 January 2013 at Uribana prison in the city of Barquisimeto.  Armed inmates clashed with National Guard troops who had come to carry out an inspection. Fifty-six inmates died.
