US governor proposes increased spending on prisons after riots

Inmates have taken over parts of a South Carolina jail, Lee Correctional Institution, twice since April last year, according to The State. This has prompted governor Nikki Haley to propose spending more money on prisons.

One of her proposals is for new cooking equipment, since dissatisfaction with prison food is said to be one of the causes of riots.

Haley has also proposed a 3 percent salary increase for officers at maximum-security prisons, in the hope that this will improve staff retention and attract more officers to fill vacant positions.

The governor also wants to spend more money on infrastructure upgrades to prevent the smuggling of contraband such as cellphones and drugs.
