The case of a 3-year-old South African girl put into a cell with her father after he was arrested for drunk driving caused an outcry.

But Cherise Nieman is not the only child to have been detained in recent days.

In New York, 7-year-old Wilson Reyes was detained, handcuffed and chained to a wall for several hours after he allegedly stole $5 (R45) at school.

Another child later confessed to taking the money.
