WJP report – “Looking back: 2012 and remand detention”

The Wits Justice Project has released “Looking back: 2012 and remand detention”, a summary of recent developments in South Africa’s remand detention landscape.

The report highlights, among other things, the appointment of a new correctional services minister, the creation of a new remand directorate and amendments to the Correctional Services Act of 1998.

The report also mentions Dudley Lee’s victory in the Constitutional Court, which ruled that the Department of Correctional Services had negligently allowed Lee to contract TB while in detention at Pollsmoor Prison.
