Mother Jones has published an excellent indepth report by two 2012 Soros Justice Media Fellows, James Ridgeway and Jean Casella, who take readers inside America’s worst prisons. Their article is a real indictment of the US prison system.

The interactive report features photos, videos and incredible stories. You will learn about the Colorado prison which a former warden described as “pretty close” to hell; the all-solitary Polunsky Unit in Texas; and the Arizona prison where awaiting-trial detainees are housed in tents – in an effort to save money – which are unheated in winter and uncooled in summer, and where the chief warden humiliates male prisoners by making them wear pink underwear.

Read the report and see what the prison facilities look like.
