Wits Justice Project contributes to community radio – Alex FM

Wits Justice Project Researcher, Robyn Leslie, is currently researching community radio and the contributions that Wits Justice Project has made to community radio stations in the Gauteng region.

Alex FM is based in Alexandra, Johannesburg.

Wits Justice Project Radio Journalist, Paul McNally, has been working alongside various local community radio stations to facilitate on-air talk shows in which topical issues – with a law focus – are discussed. McNally has been working with Alex FM in Alexandra and Thetha FM in Orange Farm.

Alex FM began in 1995 and is based in Alexandra but broadcast widely in the surrounding areas – including Randburg, Germiston, Thembisa, Diepsloot, Kempton Park, Edenvale, Marlboro and Sandton. The listenership is estimated at 91 000, appealing to listeners young and old. Alex FM broadcasts in a multitude of languages including English, Zulu, Xhosa, Sepedi, Tshwana, Tsonga and Venda.

We recently visited Alex FM (89.1 FM)to interview two of their staff members. Umbrella Mashaba is the Sales Manager and Ramatamo Sehoai hosts the daily 6pm show.

Mashaba says “Alex FM is a diverse radio station; it’s an African home because everyone is welcome”. He says the programming focus of Alex FM is to provide 70% education and 30% entertainment.
